"Installing a deck may be the most cost-efficient way to add square footage to your house, and of all the outdoor home improvements except painting, it may be the most reliable value. Decks average $6,304 and generally recoup 104% of their value. That may not sound terribly impressive, but other touted outdoor improvements fare much worse."

"There is hardly anything in the world that some man cannot make a little worse and sell a little cheaper, and the people who consider price only are this man's lawful prey." -John Ruskin

For the purposes of clarifying any "Deal" or coupon:
A "Deck" or "New Deck Installation" is defined by anything that is over 200 sf. and includes stairs and railing. Anything less may be defined as a Porch, Platform, Stoop or landing. Furthermore, sf. rates are higher for smaller items to cover set up costs; standard volume discounts on sf. rates apply to larger structures on top of any "Deals" or coupons.

This section is for the Do-It-Yourselfer!

This section is under Construction.
However, if you only require the Design & Consulting services of Custom Deckworks, you may contact Chris directly.

This is, of course, for the Do-It-Yourselfer that just needs that extra little bit of assistance in making their dream deck a reality.

While Custom Deckworks draws plans at NO CHARGE for our customers that may hire us to build their project, we cannot offer the same deal to the Do-It-Yourselfer. The reason for this is simple. When you set out to build a project for yourself, but you want our design & consulting help, our hard working carpenters will not be benefiting from the work going on at your house.

Also, you will get more than one plan provided to you. You will get the Finished "ariel view" Plan, a Framing plan, any Detail plans necessary, a complete material list, and a step-by-step instruction guide written for your custom design. We can even provide a list of the tools needed to do the job and tricks-of-the-trade will be included with the instructions. This service is much more comprehensive than what an architect would provide; and for much less than a good architect would charge these days. Depending on the situation, we may or may not need to come out for an initial visit. Being a Do-It-Yourselfer, you may be able to provide us with all the measurements and photos through email that we would need to design what you want to build. The fee would obviously be less if we don't need to visit you.

The Consulting part of this service is provided for those instances where we may have overlooked something in our instructions, you want to adjust the design during construction, or you run across anything that creates a question about anything. We care enough that everyone has the very best Deck possible that we are willing to help you any way we can, even if you want to build it yourself. However...

Please be aware, after we complete the initial stages of Design & Instruction, the Consulting, if needed, will be done over the phone & through email. Chris is the one you would be consulting and a large part of his duties includes visiting our carpenters' job sites and managing every aspect of construction for the entire Custom Deckworks company. Therefore, it is possible that you would not be able to communicate with him at the very moment you need to. In the cases where guidance is not mandatory the same day, email would suffice. Cases that require more immediate attention will need to be discussed over the phone, but you may have to leave a message that will be given priority and returned as soon as possible. In extreme cases after you begin construction, Chris may be able to actually visit you at your project location for in-person advise for an additional fee. Under no circumstances will Custom Deckworks provide any physical help in the construction of a DIY deck. If you attempt to build a quality structure on your own using our DIY Assistace, actually start construction, and then decide you'd rather have our carpenters take over for you, it MAY cost you a good deal more than if you just let us do it from the beginning. Furthermore, fees paid for DIY Design services will NOT be applied to the cost of construction, even if you want to hire us to build your project before you actually start it yourself. To keep costs down, you will need to decide upfront who is to actually construct your project.

The fees for these services can vary widely depending on your level of expertise. There will be no cost for the initial discussion of your project. Once you decide on a design, the fee or fees will be presented to you in an itemized quote. You will know all costs, mandatory and potential, and have the opportunity to approve them before any detailed design work begins. You may be presented with a contract for these services, and the text within this web page at the time of requesting these services is deemed a part of the contract. We are working on getting a viewable contract on this site so customers may read it before ever even contacting us.

Again, we at Custom Deckworks strive to provide, in any way we can, the best Decks to the people.
We look forward to working with you!

Update: 2012

Arkansas Code § 17-25-501 thru 17-25-515. Act 1208 of 2011 Summary:

ANYONE performing work at a Residence, when the project is $2,000 or more, labor & material,

IS required to have a license from the Contractors Licensing Board

starting January 1, 2012!

In most cases this does not apply to the Homeowners doing work themselves.

But if you hire someone to build your deck that does NOT have a license,

you may be breaking the law and will have very limited recourse in the event of a dispute.

If they don't have a REAL license, DON'T HIRE THEM!
